Destination Overview

For centuries these mystical mountains on the border between Uganda and DR Congo have been revered as the Source of the Nile. The ancient philosopher Ptolemy referred to them as ‘the Mountains of the Moon’ in 350AD and they remain little explored despite being the highest mountain range in Africa. The lofty summits of the main mountains are often enveloped in cloud so that for months the permanent ice fields of the highest peaks are hidden from view. It was not until a century ago that the Abruzzi expedition climbed many of the peaks in the range for the first time.
